I don’t mean for 20% of my blog to be eulogies, but I’d like to recognize the unfortunate passing of Wilson Pickett. I spend hours waxing about how profound an effect Lennon, McCartney & Finn have had on me musically, but if you’re going to draw a line from my musical beginnings to now, you have to start with Pickett. “Midnight Hour” was a veritable theme song for me and my dad when I was a boy. I remember his greatest hits LP (which was actually released in 1967) was one of the first records that I would put on by myself, just to listen. . . and to dance madly around the living room when nobody was looking (ah, childhood).
Anyway, give WP’s version of “Mustang Sally” a listen at some point today and just imagine how electrifying it must’ve been to hear a voice like that on the radio for the first time.
Alternatively, you can just sing the song yourself. Then you’ll really miss him.
